Friends of Sapelo/SINERR/Sapelo WRD
( Job Description Summary:
The Friends of Sapelo (FOS) Volunteer Coordinator assists the Sapelo Island National Estuarine Research Reserve (SINERR) and Wildlife Resources Division staff, with planning, coordinating and directing volunteer workdays and other volunteer projects (e.g., field monitoring, citizen science) on Sapelo Island, and at the Sapelo Island Visitors Center on the mainland. The Volunteer Coordinator works closely with the SINERR Stewardship Coordinator, who has primary staff responsibility for overseeing volunteer workdays and projects within the Reserve and on Sapelo. The Volunteer Coordinator serves as a liaison between SINERR/WRD and FOS, and completes summaries and reports for both, as appropriate. The Volunteer Coordinator is expected to spend 10-15 hours per week carrying out the position duties and responsibilities, and to help direct and participate in many of the volunteer workdays and projects on Sapelo.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
· With SINERR and/or WRD staff, plan, coordinate & help implement various FOS volunteer workdays and projects on Sapelo Island and at the Sapelo Island Visitors Center
· Maintain a directory of names & contact information for FOS volunteers willing & able to participate in volunteer workdays & projects
· Actively recruit volunteers for Sapelo workdays and projects using email, phone calls, sign-up sheets at FOS meetings, etc.
· Submit Sapelo passenger ferry Reservation Requests at least two weeks (whenever possible) prior to volunteer projects on Sapelo, with numbers of volunteers, schedule on Sapelo, and any special considerations (e.g., supplies, equipment to be brought on ferry)
· Communicate with SINERR/Sapelo DNR staff to agree on the number of volunteers needed per workday or project, how many hours of work will be needed, what on-island vehicles/transportation will be needed for the workday, etc.
· Maintain records of volunteer participation, including dates, number of volunteers that participated, hours worked, etc.; create periodic summary reports of such records upon request from SINERR and Sapelo WRD staff, and the FOS Board
· Facilitate the morning check-in of volunteers at the Meridian ferry dock, to ensure accurate records of participation and to assist the ferry crew with completing the passenger manifest
· Participate in many/most volunteer workdays and projects on Sapelo, as appropriate and feasible.
· Facilitate, coordinate, or assist with the acquisition by FOS members of supplies and tools needed by volunteers to complete workdays and projects
· Work with SINERR and/or Sapelo DNR staff to plan, coordinate, and implement volunteer involvement in, or support of, occasional island or mainland “special events” hosted by SINERR or Sapelo WRD
· Help the FOS Board maintain a record of recently completed volunteer workdays & projects, and upcoming volunteer opportunities, to inform and recruit FOS members at quarterly meetings
· Help facilitate FOS Board financial support for, and/or staffing assistance with, SINERR and/or Sapelo WRD special needs, especially the SINERR Education Program, and for catered events and activities
Preferred Qualifications:
– Experience coordinating, leading, or participating in volunteer programs, and/or leading, directing or coordinating groups (e.g., committees, workgroups, project teams)
– Proficient with Microsoft Office programs, especially EXCEL and WORD
– Excellent communication skills, both writing and speaking
– Self-motivating and self-directing, able to carry out duties independently
– Dedicated to providing support services and program assistance for public agency projects and activities
– Experience with power tools and building supplies a plus
– Experience with Mail Chimp and web content posting also a plus (but not a requirement).
