What a great day on Sapelo Island for the annual Crab and Shrimp Day. The weather was perfect, the ferry was full, and the visitors were ready to learn about the crab and shrimp found in the waters around Sapelo Island.
First stop, the Education Building where the participants had the opportunity to learn, up close and personal about the animals that live on Sapelo Island. Dr. Rachel Guy followed up with a presentation on life cycle of crabs and shrimps and how important the estuary and the economic impact this fishing industry has on the Georgia Coast.
Next, everyone boarded the bus for the ride to Nanny Goat beach where other SINERR staff were waiting with the seine nets. There was time for three pulls through the water and the crowd was rewarded with crabs, shrimp, fish, a bonnethead shark and a horseshoe crab.
After lunch at the pavilion, the group had time for a quick dip in the water or a short walk down the beach.
